Sami Zayn in WWE
Zayn made his WWE debut in NXT on February 13 2013, although he didn’t wrestle on that day. He first wrestled on March 7, 2013, unmasked and using his real name, in a tag team match at a live event in Tampa, Florida. He later adopted the ring name Sami Zayn.
His televised debut with NXT happened on the May 22, 2013, episode of the brand. His WWE debut happened on September 6, 2013, at a house show in Montreal. He received the NXT Superstar of the Year award at the 2014 Slammy Awards.
On December 11, 2014, he got into a title vs career match for the NXT Championship where Sebei vowed to voluntarily quit NXT if he lost the match. The match was held at NXT TakeOver: Revolution in Winter Park, Florida, and saw him defeat the defending champion, Adrian Neville.
He was drafted to RAW on July 19, 2016, and was later traded to SmackDown on April 11, 2017, as part of the Superstar Shake-up.
Sami Zayn’s heel turn
Sami turned heel for the first time in his career at the Hell in a Cell event held on October 8, 2017. He helped Kevin Owens in defeating Shane McMahon in a Falls Count Anywhere match that got him into a feud with the latter. Sebei justified his actions on the October 10 episode of SmackDown Live saying that although SmackDown is dubbed as the “Land of Opportunity”, McMahon has not given him opportunities.
He has since gone on to win the Intercontinental Championship and has had feuds with famous celebrities like Logan Paul and Johnny Knoxville.
Joining the Bloodline
Starting on the April 22 broadcast of SmackDown, Zayn sought favor with The Bloodline, the stable captained by Roman Reigns, after feeling he had lost respect and credibility in the locker room. After assisting the gang a few times, Zayn was dubbed an “Honorary Uce” and became an associate of the organization on the May 27 edition of SmackDown. Zayn beat Shinsuke Nakamura on the June 24 edition of SmackDown to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match.
Zayn did not win the eponymous event on July 2, as Theory won the match. He competed in a fatal five-way match to decide the number one challenger for the Intercontinental Title on the August 19 episode of SmackDown, which was won by Sheamus.
Sami Zayn ‘The Honorary Uce’
In the weeks that followed, tensions between Zayn and Jey Uso, another member of The Bloodline, grew as Jey did not trust Zayn and they frequently clashed. Reigns made Zayn an official “Honorary Uce” on the September 23 edition of SmackDown. Zayn and The Bloodline beat Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, and The Brawling Brutes (Sheamus, Butch, and Ridge Holland) in a WarGames match at Survivor Series WarGames.
During the bout, Jey eventually recognized Zayn as a member of The Bloodline when he demonstrated his commitment to the stable by executing a low blow to Owens. In January 2023, Zayn would be involved in a fight with The Bloodline, resulting in a Tribal Court for Zayn at Raw is XXX, where he would be declared “not guilty, for now” of betraying The Bloodline.
Fall-out with The Bloodline
During the match, Reigns had the rest of The Bloodline beat down Owens, but Zayn refused to join the beatdown and finally attacked Reigns with a chair, resulting in the whole Bloodline (except Jey) assaulting Zayn and turning him face for the first time since 2017. Zayn assaulted Reigns on the February 3 edition of SmackDown and challenged him to a bout for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at Elimination Chamber, which Reigns accepted.
Zayn failed to reclaim the championships from Reigns during the event on February 18. On the March 6 edition of Raw, Jey Uso interfered in a fight between Zayn and Jimmy Uso, costing Jimmy the match. Jey would hug Sami but end up betraying him, striking him with a superkick and then beating him together with Jimmy and Solo Sikoa. The Usos would cut a promo in the ring on the March 10 edition of SmackDown, with Jey detailing why he turned on Zayn, but Cody Rhodes would interrupt them and Zayn would leap. With Cody entering the battle, Jey’s fight would spill into the audience, where Rhodes and Zayn would fight The Usos off.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens reconcile
Cody Rhodes would attempt to reconcile Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn on the March 17 edition of SmackDown, with Kevin Owens rejecting and leaving. Zayn would confront Owens, who was outside the arena, but Owens would still refuse. In the main event, Zayn faced Jey Uso until Jimmy Uso interfered, prompting Owens to come out and defend Zayn from the Usos. The two hugged in the ring, finally reconciling Owens and Zayn. WrestleMania 39 will feature a bout between The Usos, Zayn, and Owens.
