BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Lauren McLean will be sworn in as Boise's next mayor in January 2020.
McLean won the city's first mayoral runoff election Tuesday night with 65.5 percent of the vote. With the win, McLean unseats long-time Boise mayor Dave Bieter, who has served four terms in office.
For McLean, there's little time to rest moving forward. The mayor-elect is heading out of town Wednesday morning to attend a class for new mayors. The workshop is aimed to help mayor-elects from around the country transition into office.
She spoke with CBS 2 early Wednesday before catching her flight and said she's excited to get back to Boise and get to work after the new year. Before then, she plans to spend time with family and reflect on the accomplishments of her campaign seasons.
"I would say to all the constituents and residents of the city, a big thank you," McLean said. "We've had seven months of intense conversations about where we are as a community and where we want to go. Residents of Boise recognize it's time for change, and I'm truly grateful they've placed their trust in me."
Once sworn in, McLean said she plans to get to work on issues like affordable housing and regional transit, both talking points that dominated conversations on the campaign trail. She plans to put together a task force to help address housing initiatives and other issues.
Previously, McLean spent eight years on Boise City Council, most recently serving as council president. Her win Tuesday night makes her the city's first female mayor to be elected to a full term in office. Caroline Terteling Payne was appointed interim mayor after mayor Brent Coles resigned from office back in the early 2000's.
