Boise, ID (CBS2) — On Friday, May 10, two experienced backcountry skiers were caught in an avalanche that claimed the life of one of the skiers, according to the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.
The two skiers were downclimbing to their ski descent on Donaldson Peak in Idaho's Lost River Range when one of the skiers triggered and was caught in a small wind slab avalanche.
The skier was carried down the mountain and triggered a second larger avalanche that buried the skier under 5 feet of snow.
The second skier used her satellite communication device to call for help before traveling down the avalanche path to find the buried skier using her transceiver and prob pole.
The second skier dug the buried skier out and began CPR until Search and Rescue teams were able to evacuate him, unfortunately, the skier did not survive.
